The Nagoya Port Festival (Minato Matsuri), held around Marine Day in late July, is the city’s signature summer night: some 3,000 fireworks burst directly over the harbour basin, their colours mirrored in the black water and framed by the silhouettes of cranes and ships in one of Japan’s busiest working ports. Through the afternoon the Garden Pier area fills with festival dance parades, taiko drumming and rank upon rank of food stalls, so the evening builds from street-festival bustle to the concentrated spectacle of the finale barrages.

Arrive by late afternoon to claim lawn space around Garden Pier — the aquarium-side quays fill first — and note the show fires close overhead, making even free areas feel premium. The subway crush after the finale is real: either leave before the last barrage or, better, give it an hour over festival food while the crowds drain.
