Tsuruma Park, opened in 1909 as Nagoya’s first public park, is the city’s great hanami stage: some 700 cherry trees, mostly clouds of Somei-Yoshino, bloom in late March and early April over a gracious landscape of fountains, a Western-style rose garden and a Japanese garden. This is where Nagoya comes to celebrate spring in earnest — blue tarpaulins and office parties pack the lawns by mid-morning, food stalls line the paths, and after dark lanterns and lights turn the central avenues into glowing tunnels of blossom for yozakura night viewing.

For a picnic spot on a peak weekend, someone needs to be on the grass by early morning — or simply come for the evening illuminations, when the atmosphere is at its best and the party warmth peaks. The bloom window moves year to year, so check a forecast; the days just after full bloom bring petal blizzards that many consider the most beautiful phase.
