Mt. Chokai is a majestic 2,236 m volcano rising straight from the coast on the Akita–Yamagata border — the ‘Dewa Fuji’. Its upper slopes hold alpine meadows and snow patches into summer, and clear-day panoramas sweep across the Sea of Japan. Multiple trails climb from both prefectures; the Akita-side Hokodate route is popular in the July–September season.
