The Hachimantai plateau in northern Akita is a volcanic highland of crater lakes, alpine marshes and steaming vents. The Aspite Line mountain road (open May–November) traverses the plateau past five-colour marshes and the Hachimantai summit — one of Japan’s great scenic drives, turning incandescent gold and crimson in mid-October.

Tips
The Aspite Line only opens roughly May–November (snow walls in spring, foliage in autumn). Mid-October is the peak for colour — go on a clear day for the best plateau views.
