The Akita Nairiku Line is a scenic inland railway winding 94 km between Kakunodate and Takanosu, through rice valleys, mountains and the traditional Matagi hunting country of northern Akita. Passing rustic stations and river viaducts, it’s especially magical in October’s autumn colours and again under deep winter snow.
