Nyuto Onsen is one of Japan’s most celebrated onsen destinations — seven rustic ryokan scattered through the snowy beech forests of the Nyuto mountains, each drawing from a different spring source with its own colour and mineral makeup. Tsurunoyu, operating since 1638, has the famous milky-white sulphurous open-air bath, among the most atmospheric in Japan.
