The mountains surrounding Lake Tazawa offer some of Akita’s finest hiking. Akita Komagatake (1,637 m) rises directly from the lake’s caldera rim, with sweeping views over the cobalt water to the Ou Mountains beyond. The route from the Hachigome trailhead is the most popular, taking 3–4 hours return, with alpine flowers in summer.

Tips
The Hachigome start makes Komagatake one of Tohoku’s most accessible alpine peaks. Bring layers — the summit is exposed and much cooler than the lakeside.
