Hirosaki Castle in western Aomori holds one of only twelve original Edo-period keeps left in Japan — but it is most famous as the country’s greatest cherry blossom site. In late April some 2,600 trees erupt in bloom, and fallen petals blanket the moat into the legendary pink ‘hanaikada’ flower raft.
