Hirosaki’s Neputa Festival is the quieter, more painterly counterpart to Aomori’s Nebuta. From August 1–7, fan-shaped floats (ogi-neputa) painted with mythological warrior scenes and lit from within parade through Hirosaki to the beat of taiko. The effect is more refined and mysterious than Aomori’s three-dimensional warrior figures.
