Osorezan, or ‘Mount Fear’, is one of Japan’s three most sacred sites — a bleak volcanic caldera on the remote Shimokita Peninsula. Sulfur fumes, grey pumice fields and a startlingly blue crater lake create a landscape Buddhists have long seen as the very entrance to the afterlife.
