Shirakami-Sanchi is the largest surviving virgin beech forest in East Asia, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1993. The accessible Juniko (‘12 Lakes’) area winds through ancient woodland to a chain of mountain lakes — including the intensely cobalt Aoike Blue Pond — with no crowds, just old trees and silence.
