Just outside Aomori City, the tranquil temple of Seiryuji is home to the Showa Daibutsu — at 21.35 metres, Japan’s tallest seated bronze Great Buddha, taller even than the famous Buddhas of Nara and Kamakura. Cast in 1984, it presides over spacious grounds with a striking five-story pagoda.
