Each February, the zelkova-lined Kancho Street in Towada City fills with hundreds of hand-crafted snow lanterns and kamakura (snow-igloo) shrines, lit by candlelight at dusk. Snow sculptures, warm amazake and craft stalls complete one of Tohoku’s most intimate and atmospheric winter events.
