Sukayu Onsen is one of Japan’s most historic hot springs, operating for over 400 years on the slopes of Mt. Hakkoda. Its famous ‘sennin-buro’ (thousand-person bath) is a vast 160-tatami wooden hall filled with milky sulfuric water — one of the last great traditional mixed-gender communal baths in Japan.

Tips
The main bath is mixed-gender; there are set women’s-only hours if you’d prefer. Snow can top 2 m even in late March — check road conditions in winter.
