Far out on the Tsugaru plain, Takayama Inari Shrine is Aomori’s answer to Kyoto’s Fushimi Inari — a mesmerising tunnel of vermilion torii gates snaking over a landscaped hillside garden. Remote and uncrowded, it rewards the effort with some of northern Japan’s best photos.
