Chiba offers an unusual spread of leisure options — from the world’s most beautiful theme park in Urayasu to the longest beach in Japan a ninety-minute drive away, and a cycling route that circles an entire peninsula. Whether you arrive chasing rides and fireworks or empty surf and coastal roads, the prefecture delivers leisure experiences that are difficult to replicate anywhere else near Tokyo.
Tokyo Disney Resort — Disneyland and DisneySea
Tokyo Disney Resort in Urayasu comprises two parks on Tokyo Bay: Tokyo Disneyland, which opened in 1983 as Japan’s first Western theme park, and Tokyo DisneySea, which opened in 2001 and is consistently rated among the most beautifully designed theme parks in the world. Both are operated by Oriental Land Co. to standards of cleanliness, guest service, and operational precision that other parks struggle to match.
Tokyo DisneySea — The Park Worth Prioritising
If you can only visit one park, make it DisneySea. The park’s layout is organized around seven themed “ports” — Mediterranean Harbour, American Waterfront, Lost River Delta, Arabian Coast, Mermaid Lagoon, Mysterious Island, and Fantasy Springs (added in 2024). Each port has its own visual language, architectural detail, and spatial character. Walking from the grand piazza of Mediterranean Harbour through the narrow canals of American Waterfront to the volcanic caldera of Mysterious Island feels like moving through genuinely different environments rather than stage sets.
The flagship attraction Soaring: Fantastic Flight provides a flying theatre experience over Japanese landscapes. Journey to the Center of the Earth in Mysterious Island is widely considered one of the finest theme park rides ever constructed. Indiana Jones Adventure and Sindbad’s Storybook Voyage are among the park’s beloved legacy attractions.
Tokyo Disneyland
Disneyland features a more conventional Magic Kingdom layout with Cinderella Castle at the center. The park is beloved in Japan and maintains its attractions with extraordinary care. Fantasy Land, Tomorrowland, and Adventureland form the core experience, with Enchanted Storybook Castle a draw for children. The parades and night-time spectaculars are elaborate productions with high production values.
Practical Tips for Disney
Tickets: Book tickets at tokyo-disney.jp well in advance — popular dates (Golden Week, summer, school holidays) sell out months ahead. Ticket prices vary by date: ¥7,900 to ¥10,900 per adult. Premier Access (paid fast-track) available for popular attractions.
Access: JR Keiyo Line from Tokyo Station to Maihama (15 minutes, ¥210) — the fastest and cheapest option. Disney Resort Line monorail connects the station to both parks.
Staying inside: Official Disney Hotels offer early park entry, character dining, and immersive theming. The Hotel MiraCosta is built into DisneySea itself and is the most immersive hotel experience. Book 6 months in advance.
Timing: The parks open at 8:00 AM; being at the gate before opening is the strategy for riding headline attractions before queues build. Weekday winter visits (excluding school holidays) have the shortest waits.
Kujukuri Beach — Surfing and Lessons
The Pacific swells along Kujukuri Beach arrive with the consistency and clean form that comes from 8,000 kilometres of open ocean. This is the Kanto region’s foremost surfing destination — the beach’s beach-break waves work best on south and southeast swells, and the flat sandy bottom makes it appropriate for beginners learning to stand up. Numerous surf schools operate along the Kujukuri coast, particularly around the Ichinomiya and Onjuku areas, offering two-to-three-hour beginner lessons with all equipment for approximately ¥5,000–¥8,000.
Board and wetsuit rental is available from multiple shops for independent surfers (¥2,000–¥3,000 for a half-day set). The surfing community here is friendly, and the beach culture — beachside food stalls, surf shops, the flat sand extending far in both directions — has a relaxed Pacific atmosphere that feels different from the more crowded beaches near Shonan.
Access: JR to Kujukuri (Oamishirasato) or Togane, then bus to the beach. Most convenient by car.
Boso Peninsula Cycling Route
The Boso Peninsula Cycling Route (Bosoran) circles the entire peninsula on a marked coastal path, covering approximately 130 kilometres in total. The route follows the Uchibō Line coast along Tokyo Bay on the west side and the Pacific Sotobo coast on the east, with the southern cap connecting the two through the Tateyama area. The terrain is largely flat to gently rolling with the occasional hill at the cape sections.
The route is popular with touring cyclists for its variety: industrial port scenery near Kimitsu gives way to fishing villages, then to the dramatic Pacific cliff sections near Nojimazaki and the wide empty beach of the eastern coast. Overnight stays can be broken up at Tateyama (many minshuku and ryokan) or Kamogawa. The route is well-signposted and manageable for recreational cyclists over a two-to-three-day trip.
Day cyclists often take the JR Uchibō or Sotobo Line part of the way and cycle the most scenic coastal sections, returning by train. Cycle rental is available at several Boso stations.
ZOZO Marine Stadium and Bayfront
ZOZO Marine Stadium on the Chiba City waterfront is the home ground of the Chiba Lotte Marines baseball team. A professional baseball game here — October evenings are particularly atmospheric when the team is in playoff contention — combines sport with a pleasant waterfront park setting on Tokyo Bay. The stadium holds about 30,000 spectators and has an accessible, family-oriented atmosphere typical of Japanese professional baseball.
Tickets are available at convenience stores (Lawson, FamilyMart) on game days and online. Prices run ¥1,600 to ¥4,000 depending on section. The adjacent Makuharihama Beach Park provides pleasant pre-game walking along the waterfront.
Access: JR Keiyo Line to Kaihin Makuhari, then 10 minutes on foot.
Makuhari Messe — Concerts, Expos, and Esports
Makuhari Messe is one of the largest convention and exhibition centres in Japan, hosting major concerts, international gaming expos (Tokyo Game Show runs here in September), automobile shows, and major esports events year-round. The venue is enormous — its exhibition halls cover over 200,000 square metres — and the calibre of events is consistently high.
Tokyo Game Show (late September) draws 200,000 visitors over four days and is the most significant annual gaming event in Asia. International artists performing Japan tours often include a Makuhari date alongside Tokyo shows. Events can be checked at messe.co.jp.
Access: JR Keiyo Line to Kaihin Makuhari, then 5 minutes on foot.
Practical Tips
Disney advance planning: Tickets and hotel reservations for Disney are the only items in Chiba that absolutely require planning months ahead. For everything else, spontaneity works.
Combining leisure days: Kujukuri surfing + Katsuura fish market morning makes a natural Boso day. ZOZO Stadium + Makuhari Messe events are both at Kaihin Makuhari and can be combined with a Tokyo Bay sunset walk.
