Matsuyama Castle stands on Mount Katsuyama in the very centre of the city, one of just twelve Japanese castles to keep its original Edo-period wooden keep. It is among the finest of them all: a complete hilltop complex of interconnected keeps, turrets and gates, built for defence with clever twisting approaches, and beautifully preserved. A ropeway or chairlift carries you up the hill (or you can walk), and from the top the reward is a magnificent 360-degree panorama over Matsuyama to the islands of the Seto Inland Sea. Surrounded by cherry trees that blossom in spring, it is one of Shikoku’s great castles and the historic heart of Matsuyama.
