The Niihama Taiko Festival is one of the most powerful and spectacular festivals in Shikoku, held in mid-October in the industrial city of Niihama. Its stars are the taikodai — enormous, lavishly decorated drum floats, some over five metres tall, weighing several tonnes and covered in gold embroidery, each carried entirely on the shoulders of around 150 men. Teams from across the city hoist these giants aloft and parade them, competing to lift and ‘fight’ them in displays of raw strength, coordination and civic pride, accompanied by the beat of the drum inside and the roar of the crowd. Loud, muscular and intensely local, it is a thrilling autumn spectacle quite unlike a gentle festival — an unforgettable display of communal power.
