Oyamazumi Shrine on Omishima island is one of the most important and atmospheric shrines in western Japan, long revered by warriors as a guardian of soldiers and sailors. For over a thousand years, victorious samurai and commanders dedicated their armour and weapons here in thanks, and as a result the shrine’s treasure house holds an astonishing collection — the greatest concentration of nationally designated armour and swords in Japan, including pieces linked to famous historical figures. The shrine grounds are equally moving, presided over by a sacred camphor tree said to be over 2,600 years old and other ancient giants. Reached on the Shimanami Kaido, it combines living Shinto tradition, samurai history and natural grandeur in one remarkable island setting.
