Dazaifu Tenmangu, just outside Fukuoka city, is one of the most revered shrines in Japan, dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, the Heian-era scholar-official deified as Tenjin, the god of learning. Students from across the country come to pray for success in exams, and the beautiful grounds are famous for their plum trees — Michizane’s favourite — which bloom in late winter, including a legendary ‘flying plum’ said to have flown from Kyoto to be near him. The approach to the shrine is a lively street lined with souvenir and snack shops, most famously selling grilled umegae-mochi rice cakes. With its handsome main hall, ponds, camphor trees and nearby Kyushu National Museum, Dazaifu is an essential and atmospheric day trip from Fukuoka.

Tips
Come in late winter for the plum blossom the shrine is famous for, or autumn for the maples, and try a freshly grilled umegae-mochi from the shops along the approach.
