The Hakata Dontaku Port Festival, held each year on May 3–4 during Golden Week, is one of Japan’s most-attended festivals, drawing over two million people. With roots going back centuries to New Year celebrations, it has grown into a joyful, participatory city-wide event: a huge citizens' parade fills the main street with thousands of participants from local groups, companies and schools, dancing and performing in costume. A signature sight is people clapping wooden shamoji rice scoops together in rhythm as they dance. Dozens of stages around the city host music and performances, and the streets fill with food stalls and crowds. Less about ancient ritual than modern civic celebration, Dontaku is a lively, welcoming and colourful way to experience Fukuoka in early May.
