Mojiko, at the northern tip of Kyushu in Kitakyushu, was once one of Japan’s busiest international trading ports, and its historic heart is preserved as the charming ‘Mojiko Retro’ district. Around the harbour stand a cluster of elegant Western-style buildings from the Meiji and Taisho eras — a former customs house, the old Moji railway station, trading company offices and a striking former bank — their retro architecture beautifully lit at night. Set on the narrow Kanmon Strait facing Shimonoseki on Honshu, the waterfront offers strait and bridge views, boat cruises, and an undersea pedestrian tunnel you can walk to Honshu. Mojiko’s own specialty is ‘yaki-curry’, baked curry rice with cheese and egg. Nostalgic, scenic and relaxed, it makes a pleasant excursion in northern Kyushu.
