Ohori Park is Fukuoka’s most beloved city park, built around a large pond created from the old moat of Fukuoka Castle. A scenic walking and jogging path circles the water, crossing a chain of small islands linked by stone bridges, with willows, pavilions and cafes along the way — a favourite spot for locals to stroll, relax and watch the sunset. Adjoining the park are the stone walls and ruins of Fukuoka Castle (Maizuru Park), once the largest castle in Kyushu, whose ramparts and turret sites give fine views and burst into cherry blossom in spring. Beside them lies an exquisite traditional Japanese garden. Central, green and peaceful, Ohori Park is a lovely place to slow down between the city’s sights.
