Yanagawa, a former castle town in southern Fukuoka, is laced with a network of canals that once served its moats and waterways, earning it the nickname the ‘Venice of Kyushu’. The classic way to experience it is a leisurely boat cruise: you board a low, flat wooden donko-bune, and a boatman poles you slowly along the tranquil canals, gliding under low stone bridges (you sometimes duck), past willows, old white-walled storehouses, gardens and glimpses of local life, often singing traditional boat songs along the way. In winter the boats have heated kotatsu tables. Yanagawa’s other specialty is unagi no seiromushi — steamed eel over rice — a rich local delicacy best enjoyed after the cruise. Relaxing and atmospheric, it makes a lovely day trip from Fukuoka.
