The Bandai-Azuma Skyline and the neighbouring Nishi-Azuma Sky Valley are two of Tohoku’s most celebrated scenic mountain drives, winding roughly 30 km combined through the volcanic Azuma range at elevations over 1,600 m. Each curve reveals a new lookout over jagged peaks, steaming volcanic vents and, come October, some of the region’s most vivid autumn foliage — a fiery tapestry of maple and beech that draws road-trippers from across Japan. Both routes are seasonal toll roads, closed by snow each winter.
