Goshiki-numa, the ‘Five Colour Ponds’, is a chain of volcanic lakes on the northern side of Mount Bandai, formed when the 1888 eruption dammed local rivers and created dozens of ponds across the Urabandai plateau. Mineral content and depth give each pond its own distinct hue — from cobalt blue to jade green to milky turquoise — best appreciated on the roughly 3.6 km walking trail that links the main ponds, part of the wider Bandai Highland Lakes region of forested trails and mountain scenery.

Getting There

Tips
Walk the trail one-way and take the seasonal shuttle bus back rather than doubling back. Bright, sunny days bring out the ponds' colours most vividly — overcast weather mutes the effect.
