Higashiyama Onsen, tucked into a wooded river gorge just outside Aizu-Wakamatsu, is one of Fukushima’s oldest hot spring towns, with a history stretching back some 1,300 years. Traditional ryokan line the Yugawa River, several of which retain a small community of working geisha who continue a centuries-old entertainment tradition once enjoyed by Aizu’s samurai elite. The mineral-rich waters and riverside setting make it a relaxing complement to a day exploring nearby Tsurugajo Castle.
