Soma Nomaoi is one of Japan’s most extraordinary living traditions — a centuries-old cavalry festival in which several hundred horsemen, dressed in full samurai armour bearing family crests, gallop across open fields, compete to catch releasing flags, and parade through the streets of Soma and Minamisoma in a display rooted in real military horsemanship exercises once practised by the region’s samurai clans. Designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property, the three-day festival each July remains a genuinely local event, run by the descendants of the samurai families it honours.
