Tsuchiyu Onsen is a compact, historic hot spring town tucked into a river gorge on the edge of the Azuma mountains, just a short drive from Fukushima City. Traditional ryokan and free public foot baths line the Arakawa River, and the town is known nationally as a centre for traditional kokeshi wooden doll craftsmanship, with workshops where visitors can watch artisans at work. Tsuchiyu also pioneered small-scale hydroelectric power generation using its rushing mountain river, an innovative approach to disaster recovery after 2011.
