Gifu Castle sits dramatically atop 329-metre Mount Kinka, reached by a ropeway followed by a short walk, and was once the stronghold of the warlord Oda Nobunaga, who launched his campaign to unify Japan from here in the 16th century. Though the current keep is a modern reconstruction, its commanding hilltop position offers sweeping panoramic views over Gifu City, the Nagara River winding below and the surrounding plains, making the journey up as much about the vista as the castle itself.
