On a small number of select evenings each winter, usually in January and February, the snow-covered gassho-zukuri farmhouses of Shirakawa-go are illuminated after dark, their thatched roofs glowing warmly against the deep snow in one of Japan’s most magical and photographed seasonal sights. The event has become so popular that access is now strictly managed by advance reservation, with limited spots for both viewing and parking, so visiting requires planning ahead rather than simply turning up on the night.
