Miyajima is famous for its maples — the island’s signature sweet, momiji manju, is even shaped like a maple leaf — and each autumn Momijidani, the ‘maple valley’ behind Itsukushima Shrine, becomes one of the most beautiful places in western Japan. Hundreds of maple trees, planted over centuries, turn brilliant shades of red, orange and gold in November, framing a small park of stone bridges, a mountain stream and the lower station of the Mount Misen ropeway. Combined with the floating shrine, the wild deer and the forested mountain behind, the island in full autumn colour is unforgettable, and far quieter in the evening once the day trippers leave.

Tips
Time your visit for mid to late November when the maples peak — the window is short and shifts year to year, so check foliage reports. Come on a weekday if you can, as autumn weekends are very busy, and stay into the evening after the day trippers leave, when the valley, shrine and lit torii are far more peaceful; it pairs perfectly with the ropeway up Mount Misen.
