Hokkaido’s second city, Asahikawa, is one of Japan’s coldest places — and it embraces winter wholeheartedly. Each February, the Asahikawa Winter Festival raises some of the largest snow sculptures in Japan (it has held world records), with huge snow stages, slides and illuminations along the Ishikari River and downtown. The city is also home to the wildly popular Asahiyama Zoo, famous for its winter penguin walk, and is a hub for Asahikawa-style soy ramen and a gateway to the Daisetsuzan mountains. Snowy, festive and authentic, it’s a great winter base.
