Asahiyama Zoo, in Asahikawa in central Hokkaido, is one of Japan’s most famous and popular zoos, celebrated for its pioneering approach to displaying animals. Rather than static enclosures, it uses clever ‘behavioural exhibition’ designs that let visitors see animals moving and behaving naturally, up close and from surprising angles. Highlights include a polar bear enclosure with a domed viewing capsule, a penguin habitat with an underwater tunnel, a seal tank with a vertical clear cylinder the seals shoot through, and enclosures for red pandas, big cats, orangutans and more. Its single most famous event is the winter ‘Penguin Walk’, when king penguins are let out to waddle in a procession through the snow past delighted crowds — a must-see that draws visitors in the cold months. Well designed, engaging and enjoyable for all ages, Asahiyama Zoo is especially rewarding in winter, and pairs well with the nearby Sounkyo gorge and Daisetsuzan.

Tips
Visit in winter (roughly late December to mid-March) to see the famous Penguin Walk, held once or twice daily — check the schedule and go early for a good spot. Note the zoo closes for some transition periods between seasons, allow 2–3 hours, dress very warmly in winter, and combine it with nearby Sounkyo.
