Goryokaku, in Hakodate in southern Hokkaido, is one of Japan’s most distinctive historical sites: a large, star-shaped Western-style fortress completed in 1866 near the end of the samurai era. Built to defend against foreign powers and later the site of a decisive battle of the Boshin War, its unusual five-pointed geometric design — inspired by European star forts — was intended to eliminate blind spots for defenders. Today the fort is a beautiful public park, its moats and earthen ramparts enclosing gardens, walking paths and the reconstructed Hakodate Magistrate’s Office. The distinctive star shape is best appreciated from the top of the adjacent Goryokaku Tower, a 107-metre observation tower offering panoramic views of the fort and city. Goryokaku is especially famous in spring, when around 1,600 cherry trees burst into bloom and the star-shaped moat becomes a spectacular ring of pink. Historic, scenic and beautiful year-round, it’s one of Hakodate’s must-see attractions.

Tips
Go up Goryokaku Tower first to appreciate the star shape from above, then explore the park at ground level. Visit in late April to early May for the spectacular cherry blossoms (and evening illuminations), come in the morning to combine with Hakodate’s morning market, and allow around an hour and a half.
