The Former Hokkaido Government Office, affectionately nicknamed ‘Akarenga’ (‘Red Brick’), is one of Sapporo’s most beloved historic landmarks, standing grandly in the heart of the city. Completed in 1888 in an American neo-Baroque style, this imposing red-brick building — made with some 2.5 million locally-fired bricks and topped by an octagonal dome — served as the seat of Hokkaido’s government for about 80 years. It’s a striking symbol of the Meiji-era pioneer spirit and the American influence on the island’s development. Fronted by attractive gardens with ponds and seasonal flowers, and lined with trees that glow with colour in autumn, the building and its grounds make a lovely and photogenic city-centre stroll. It’s especially picturesque in the snow and when the front garden blooms. A short walk from Sapporo Station, the Akarenga is a graceful, free and easy historic stop that pairs naturally with the nearby Clock Tower and Odori Park.
