Moerenuma Park, on the northeastern edge of Sapporo, is a remarkable green space conceived as a single, unified work of art by the renowned Japanese-American sculptor Isamu Noguchi. Built on the site of a former waste treatment plant and completed in 2005 (following Noguchi’s master plan), the entire park is essentially one vast sculpture, blending art, architecture and nature across roughly 190 hectares. Its striking features include Mount Moere, a perfectly geometric man-made hill offering panoramic views; the Glass Pyramid ‘HIDAMARI’, a gleaming structure housing galleries, a shop and café; the elegant Sea Fountain, which performs choreographed water shows; a beach-like play area, and geometric play equipment. Clean, minimalist and beautifully designed, the park is lovely in every season — cherry blossoms in spring, greenery and fountains in summer, colour in autumn and snow in winter, when it becomes a cross-country skiing spot. Peaceful and architecturally unique, Moerenuma Park is a rewarding escape a little outside central Sapporo.
