A short train ride from Sapporo, Otaru is a postcard-pretty port town built on a once-booming herring and trade economy. Its centrepiece is the Otaru Canal, lined with handsome stone warehouses and Victorian-style gas lamps — impossibly romantic at dusk and magical under winter snow. The old merchant streets now brim with glassblowing studios, music-box shops, sushi counters and sake breweries. Easy to reach and full of charm, Otaru is one of Hokkaido’s most popular day trips.

The Otaru Canal

  • The canal, with its stone warehouses and old-fashioned gas lamps, is the iconic image of Otaru — best at dusk when the lamps glow.
  • Stroll the towpath, browse warehouse cafés and shops, and take a short canal cruise.
  • In February, the Otaru Snow Light Path lines the canal and side streets with candle-lit snow lanterns — enchanting.

Crafts & food

  • Glassworks: Otaru is famous for glassblowing — browse studios and shops (Kitaichi Glass) or try a hands-on workshop.
  • Music boxes: the grand Music Box Museum at the head of Sakaimachi street is a must.

Sakaimachi & old streets

  • Sakaimachi-dori: a preserved merchant street of converted warehouses, now boutiques, sweets and cafés.
