The Otaru Snow Light Path (Otaru Yuki Akari no Michi) is one of Hokkaido’s most enchanting and romantic winter events, held each February in the historic port and canal city of Otaru, near Sapporo. For around ten evenings, the town is transformed into a magical winter wonderland as thousands of small candles are placed in delicate snow lanterns and hand-crafted snow sculptures, casting a soft, warm glow along the famous Otaru Canal, the former railway line, and small nooks throughout the town. The gentle candlelight reflecting on the canal water and glowing against the snow and historic stone warehouses creates a deeply atmospheric, intimate scene, quite different from the grander scale of the Sapporo Snow Festival held around the same time. Many of the displays are lovingly made by local volunteers, giving the event a warm, community feel. Tips
