- Watch from riverbanks and bridges (e.g. around Sapporo’s Toyohira River and many rural streams) and at fish ladders/weirs.

- Shore/surf casting for autumn salmon is hugely popular along the coasts; guided river fishing trips are available for fly and lure anglers.
- Important: catching salmon in rivers is strictly regulated/prohibited in most places — fishing is generally allowed from the sea/shore with the right gear, and rules vary by area and season.
