Shikisai-no-oka (‘Hills of Seasonal Colour’) is a spectacular flower garden set on the rolling hills of Biei in central Hokkaido, famous for its vast, undulating patchwork of vividly coloured flower fields. Across some 15 hectares, broad stripes of blooms — lavender, poppies, salvia, marigolds, sunflowers, lupins and many more — carpet the hillsides in bands of colour that shift through the summer and autumn, set against a backdrop of the Tokachi mountain range and Biei’s iconic gently rolling farmland. From roughly spring to late autumn the fields put on a changing display, at their most spectacular in mid-to-late summer. Visitors can explore the extensive grounds on foot, or ride a ‘norokko’ tractor-buggy or rent a cart to cover more ground. The site also has an alpaca farm, a shop selling local produce, and (in winter) snow activities. Colourful, expansive and photogenic, Shikisai-no-oka is a highlight of the Biei-Furano flower region.

Tips
