The Sapporo TV Tower, standing at the eastern end of the city’s central Odori Park, is one of Sapporo’s most recognisable landmarks. Completed in 1957 and rising about 147 metres, this red-and-white steel tower has a distinctly retro, mid-century charm. Its main draw is the observation deck at around 90 metres, which offers a superb straight-line view westward down the length of green Odori Park to the mountains beyond, as well as panoramas over the grid-planned city. The view is especially spectacular during the Sapporo Snow Festival, when Odori Park below fills with giant snow sculptures, and during summer flower displays and winter illuminations. At its base is a lively floor with shops, cafés and the quirky local mascot ‘Terebi To-san’. Quick and easy to visit right in the city centre, the Sapporo TV Tower is a fun stop for a classic view over Sapporo, particularly memorable when the park below is lit up or filled with festival displays.

Tips
Go up towards dusk to catch both the daytime view and the city lights coming on. Visit during the Snow Festival for a spectacular view over the snow sculptures in Odori Park below, combine it with a stroll through the park, and allow around half an hour.
