Upopoy (the National Ainu Museum and Park) at Shiraoi is Japan’s flagship centre for the culture of the Ainu, the Indigenous people of Hokkaido and the north. Opened in 2020 on the shore of Lake Poroto, this thoughtful complex tells the Ainu story — their language, beliefs, crafts and connection to nature — long marginalised and now celebrated. With a modern museum, traditional houses, live music and dance, craft demonstrations and hands-on workshops, Upopoy is a moving, eye-opening stop that adds real depth to a Hokkaido trip.
