Hanasajiki — the name means ‘flower balcony’ — is a hillside park on the northern tip of Awaji Island, planted with vast single-colour blocks of flowers that change through the year: rape blossom and poppies in spring, salvia and marigolds in summer, and a famous sweep of cosmos in autumn. The slope faces north-east toward Osaka Bay, so the flowers are seen against sea and sky rather than a backdrop of trees, and paths run right through the plantings. It is free to enter, sits fifteen minutes from the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge, and rewards a short stop enormously.

Tips
Check what is actually in bloom before making the trip — the park replants between seasons, and there are short gaps when the beds are bare. It is free and takes under an hour, so treat it as one stop on an Awaji driving loop rather than a destination in itself; the hilltop is exposed, so bring a windproof layer even on warm days.
