The Kasumi coast, on the Sea of Japan shore of northern Hyogo, is the finest coastal scenery in the prefecture and part of the San’in Kaigan UNESCO Global Geopark. Millions of years of volcanic rock and relentless northern swell have carved the shoreline into columned cliffs, arches, sea caves and pine-topped islets standing in strikingly clear green water. Small sightseeing boats thread among them from the fishing harbour, clifftop paths link viewpoints along the shore, and the same port that draws visitors in summer lands the snow crab that fills the town’s inns in winter.

Getting There
- By train: JR San’in Line to Kasumi Station, then a short bus or taxi to the harbour.
- By car: the coast road is the point — allow time for viewpoint stops.
Tips
The sightseeing boats only run in reasonable weather and largely from spring to autumn, so check sailings before committing to the trip; the northern swell cancels them readily. A car makes far more of this coast than the train does, since the best viewpoints are strung along the coast road, and combining the coast with a night at Kinosaki makes an ideal two-day loop.
