Maiko Park occupies the narrow strip of Kobe shoreline directly beneath the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge, and it exists to let you get close to the thing. Its centrepiece is the Maiko Marine Promenade, a walkway built into the bridge structure that carries you 150 metres out over the water on a deck 47 metres up, with glass floor panels looking straight down at the churning tidal currents. In the same grounds stands the Ijokaku, a striking octagonal green villa built in 1915 for a Chinese merchant, along with pines, sea views and picnic lawns.

Getting There
- By train: JR Maiko or Sanyo Maiko-koen Station, a two-minute walk.
- From Sannomiya: about 20 minutes by rapid service.
Tips
The park itself is free and the views of the bridge from the shore are excellent, so the paid promenade is optional — but the glass floor panels above the tidal race are genuinely startling and worth the small fee. Come on a clear day for Awaji Island views, and stay for sunset, when the strait and the bridge illumination line up beautifully.
