Chusonji in Hiraizumi is one of Tohoku’s greatest treasures. Its Konjikido (Golden Hall), built in 1124 and entirely sheathed in gold leaf, shelters the mummified remains of four Fujiwara lords — a dazzling survival of Heian Buddhist art and the centrepiece of a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Tips
Photography is not allowed inside the Golden Hall, which sits within a protective glass case. Autumn (late Oct–Nov) is the most beautiful time to visit.
