Hiraizumi holds two Fujiwara festivals a year — in May and early November — recreating the glory of its 12th-century golden age. Processions in full Heian court costume, sacred kagura and the magnificent Ennen no Mai (longevity dance) performed by masked priests fill the UNESCO temple grounds, drawing visitors from across Japan.
