Geibikei is one of Iwate’s most tranquil scenic spots — a gorge of towering 100-metre limestone cliffs explored by traditional flat-bottomed boat. The boatman poles slowly upstream and, at the turning point, sings a haunting folk song that echoes off the cliffs. A gentle, atmospheric ride quite unlike the wilder Genbikei nearby.

Don’t confuse it with Genbikei — Geibikei is the boat-ride gorge. Autumn foliage is spectacular; boats are heated in winter for the snow scenery.
