Hachimantai is a serene volcanic highland straddling the Iwate–Akita border — a plateau of alpine marshes, ponds and hot springs. It holds the rare Yakehashiri lava flow (a national natural monument) and the famous ‘Dragon Eye’, a ring-shaped snowmelt pattern that appears on a highland pond in late spring.
